Although Mao began the “Learn from Lei Feng” campaign in 1963, the model hero continued to be an important figure well into the 1990s. After the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests and subsequent violent government crackdown in 1989, the Party reissued images of Lei Feng in order to reeducate the people and emphasize the importance of obedience and self-sacrifice.
