Jin Xunhua was a student and Red Guard who was sent to the countryside in Heilongjiang. During a river flood, two utility poles were swept away. Jin and two other comrades dove in to retrieve them, and Jin died while trying to save one of other young men from drowning after the poles had been secured. Soon after his death, Jin was held up as a hero for his selflessness and was used as a model to promote the policy of sending urban youths to the countryside despite the risks.
