The image depicted on this plaque is based on a famous traditional-style ink painting by the artist Qian Songyan, who created his composition while sketching form nature in Changshu in the Jiangsu province. The composition features many hectares of rich farmland, divided by winding canals; in the foreground is the small town of Changshu, which had recently been collectivized. This peaceful landscape highlights the nation’s agricultural prosperity, and thus, the alleged success of the CCP’s land reform policies that were enacted in the 1950s and early 1960s.
